Satellite Workshop

Super-CLAM - Super-resolution integrated communications, localization, vision and radio mapping

Workshop co-located with ICASSP 2024

Monday, 15 April, 08:30 - 12:00, Room 206

This workshop is organized by two ongoing EU projects, CONVERGE and TERRAMETA

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) specially coupled with reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) has established itself as key trend towards 6G. Waveforms and signal processing algorithms traditionally used in wireless communications are making their way into radio-based sensing. The increasing focus into higher frequency bands, namely going to the sub-THz as well as into larger antenna arrays is opening the potential for super-resolution sensing, with applications ranging from channel estimation to device localisation, and device-free environment mapping. The TERRAMETA project is addressing specifically the development of sub-THz RIS with a focus on both the hardware implementation and signal processing algorithms for communications, localisation and sensing. This trend towards increasingly higher operation frequencies spanning into the sub-THz intensifies the requirements for operation in line-of-sight conditions. This exposes an additional opportunity which has been little explored so far, the employment of computer vision solutions. Although telecommunications and computer vision belong to distinct scientific fields, this is set to change with the creation of this new joint research field resulting from the advent of higher frequency wireless communications with line-of-sight operating ranges. The CONVERGE project is exploring this possibility of leveraging on computer vision data to predict wireless channel dynamics and help build high-definition 3D maps for localisation and sensing applications while, on the other hand, radio-based sensing/imaging has the potential to empower computer vision applications becoming more resilient against occlusion and poor luminosity.

However, the full potential of this convergent research area can only be reached by significant interaction between the separate constitutive areas, for which this Workshop will provide a collaborative forum.

 Workshop Program

Keynote: "Integration is all you need:  a vision of joint sensing, learning, and communication networks" (Prof. Nuria González-Prelcic)

Abstract: Wireless networks are being redesigned to provide sensing and communication services. In this talk, I provide an overview of the different aspects of the network that can be integrated. The role of machine learning is so critical that I envision what I call an ISLAC (integrated sensing, learning and communication) network. I define the concept of the ISLAC map and its connection to the idea of sensing-aided network operation–a less conventional avenue to integrate sensing and communication- which leads to my vision of the network as a learning entity. Moreover, I discuss specific examples of the integration of machine learning and conventional signal processing algorithms as a tool to solve specific tasks in dual purpose networks.  Then, I describe how the integration of new elements in the infrastructure of the ISLAC network can enhance performance, both for sensing and communication services. I also review examples of the benefits of integration of information from different network sensing modalities. Finally, I address the concept of multimodal integration, where information from conventional sensors and network sensing modalities can be fused for different purposes.

Invited Talk: "New Frontiers in Integrated Sensing & Communication and RIS-Assisted Localization" (Dr. Silvia Mura)

Abstract: Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) systems, alongside Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs), are reshaping wireless technology, enhancing both sensing and communication capabilities in 6G systems. ISAC seamlessly integrates sensing and communication functions, ensuring reliable communication at high frequencies by actively sensing the environment, while RISs play a pivotal role in refining localization accuracy through the manipulation of electromagnetic waves. The synergy between RIS technology and ISAC systems underscores their transformative potential for future wireless services.

Dr. Silvia Mura

Silvia Mura obtained her M.S. degree in Telecommunication Engineering and a Ph.D. cum Laude in Information Technology from Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy, in 2020 and 2023, respectively. Presently, she holds a position as a researcher at the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria, Politecnico di Milano. Her primary research areas encompass signal processing for millimeter-waves communications, vehicular-to-everything communications, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces and integrated sensing and communication systems.
